Circulation Policies

The Circulation Department of Olson Library has two fundamental goals: (1) to facilitate access to library collections through the circulation of library material, and (2) to provide access to the widest possible collection of resources through interlibrary loan and document delivery.

Borrowing Material:

Students, staff, and faculty need an NMU ID card to borrow materials. Community members living anywhere in the Upper Peninsula, and over the age of 19, may purchase a courtesy card at the Circulation desk for an annual fee of $25.00. NMU alumni can get a free courtesy card by coming to the Public Services Desk with proof of Alumni Association membership (Alumni Association membership is free to all graduates of NMU). The following chart outlines circulation loan periods:

Renewing Olson Library Material

Any material except those on hold, recall, or reserve may be renewed. To renew Olson Library materials online, login to your account in the Library Catalog. Additionally, renewals may be done in-person at the circulation desk, by telephone (906-227-2260), or by e-mail to renewal@nmu.edu. Please include your first and last name, and a middle initial in the e-mail. Overdue materials may not be renewed online. Please contact the library directly at (906-227-2260) or in-person.

Renewing MelCat Material

To check on the due date or renew items received through MelCat, login to MyMel by entering your name and barcode number from the back of your Wildcat Express Card. Once logged in, click the "items currently checked out" link. You will see the due date for each item currently checked out. To renew an item, click the checkbox next to the appropriate item and click the "Renew Selected" button. Make note of the new due date. Click the "Logout" button when finished.

Renewing Interlibrary Loan Material

The loan period for interlibrary loan materials varies and is set by the lending libraries. To request an extension of the loan period online, login to the Interlibrary Loan system. Select the "View/Renew Checked Out Items" button, click on the "View/Edit" button for the item you would like to renew, then click the Request Renewal button. The Interlibrary Loan staff will notify you if the lending library will allow an extension. Additionally, renewal requests may be made in person at the circulation desk, by telephone (906-227-2260), or by e-mail to libill@nmu.edu.

Overdue Fines & Bills

Students and courtesy card patrons will be charged a fine of .15 per day per item for overdue materials with a maximum fine of $15.00 per item.  Reserve materials will be charged a fine of .60 per hour per item or $10.00 per day (whichever is less) for overdue materials. Fines for all materials are doubled for recalled items.

If an item is 50 days overdue, a bill is sent for the replacement cost of the item plus a non-refundable $15 processing fee. If the item is returned within 30 days of the billing date the replacement cost will be refunded and late fees will be assessed.

There are no refunds of replacement charges after 30 days from billing even if the items are returned. Such items will be considered gifts. You may request a letter acknowledging your gift at the time you return the item(s). Fines and processing fees are non-refundable.

Registration, diplomas, and transcripts will be held until all materials are returned and/or all fines are paid. Olson Library reserves the right to suspend a patron’s borrowing privileges.

If you wish to appeal these charges, you must do so in writing within 15 days of the billing date. Fill out the Billing and Fines Appeal form. Someone will contact you within two weeks.
