Notebook Computer Summer Policy (Students)

PURPOSE: Identify summer notebook computer use, return, and fee credit.
APPLICABILITY: NMU Students
Students attending classes in the winter semester who pre-register for the following fall semester by the date that notebook computers are due (usually the Tuesday after commencement - the day semester grades are due) may continue to use the notebook computer that was issued to them over the summer with no additional fee or deposit required.
The student must pay fall semester tuition by the date indicated on the tuition bill. If tuition is not paid, the notebook computer must be returned by the tuition due date.
If tuition is not paid and the notebook computer is not returned by the tuition deadline, NMU will begin collection procedures to recover the notebook computer.
A student severing his/her connection with the university must return the notebook computer immediately. Thus, if a student drops his/her fall registration before tuition is due, the notebook computer must be returned immediately.
Note: If the notebook computer lease expires at the end of August, the student must return that notebook computer and pick up another notebook computer during distribution at the beginning of the fall semester. Students will be notified by e-mail (sent to their @nmu.edu account) that the computer is due for exchange.
Continuing students registered for summer but not continuing in fall
Students attending classes in the winter semester who are pre-registered for summer session may continue to use the notebook computer issued to them until the date grades are due after the official last day of summer session.
If a student decides to continue in fall semester and registers for classes prior to the last day of summer session, the student may continue to use the notebook computer. If fall tuition is not paid and the notebook computer is not returned by the tuition deadline, NMU will begin collection procedures to recover the notebook computer. The note regarding end of lease computers from the preceding section of this policy also applies.
Students registered for summer, continuing full-time in fall semester
Notebook computers are rented from the Library for the summer session; a $250 rental fee is charged. The notebook computer is due back to the Library by the due date (usually the day grades are due after the official end of summer session). The student will be issued a notebook computer during fall distribution. The student’s account will be credited for the amount of the summer rental charge. Upon verification of continuing participation in the TLC notebook program (i.e. registered full-time for fall semester with tuition obligation met), the student will be issued a credit through Financial Services. No credits will be issued for daily or weekly rental charges.
New students registered for summer, continuing full-time in fall semester
Notebook computers will be issued from Micro Repair for students who were not enrolled in the winter semester but are enrolled for the summer and fall semesters. As long as the student is enrolled for the fall semester and their fall tuition obligation is met on time, there will be no charge for the summer notebook usage. If the tuition obligation is not met by the tuition due date, the student will be charged $250 ($345 for a Mac) for the summer usage and the standard late fee charges that occur between the fall tuition due date and the return of the notebook. In these cases, Micro Repair will notify the Library to bill the student the summer rental fee.
