| Circulation Policies
The Circulation Department of Olson Library has two fundamental goals: (1) to facilitate access to library collections through the circulation of library material, and (2) to provide access to the widest possible collection of resources through interlibrary loan and document delivery.
Students, staff, and faculty need an NMU ID card to borrow materials. Community members living anywhere in the Upper Peninsula, and over the age of 19, may purchase a courtesy card at the Circulation desk for an annual fee of $12.00. The following chart outlines circulation time periods:

Any material except those on hold or recalled may be renewed. To renew materials online, login to your account in the Library Catalog. Additionally, renewals may be done in person at the circulation desk, by telephone (906-227-2260), or by e-mail to renewal@nmu.edu. To request renewals of overdue materials, contact the circulation department directly.
The loan period for interlibrary loan materials varies and is set by the lending libraries. To request an extension of the loan period online, login to the Interlibrary Loan system. Select the "View/Renew Checked Out Items" button, click on the "View/Edit" button for the item you would like to renew, then click the Request Renewal button. The Interlibrary Loan staff will notify you if the lending library will allow an extension. Additionally, renewal requests may be made in person at the circulation desk, by telephone (906-227-2260), or by e-mail to libill@nmu.edu.
Students and courtesy card patrons will be charged a fine of .10 per day per item for overdue materials. Reserve materials loaned on an hourly basis will be charged a fine of .60 per hour per item for overdue materials. Fines for all materials are doubled for recalled items. If an item is 50 days overdue, a bill is sent for the replacement cost of the item plus a non-refundable $10 processing fee. If the item is returned within 30 days of the billing date the replacement cost will be refunded.
Check out the map of the library to locate the Circulation Desk. You will find the Circulation Desk near the bottom of the page.
