Circulation Policies

The Circulation Department of Olson Library has two fundamental goals: (1) to facilitate access to library collections through the circulation of library material, and (2) to provide access to the widest possible collection of resources through interlibrary loan and document delivery.

Borrowing Material:

Students, faculty, and staff need a current NMU ID card to borrow materials. Materials may be checked out at the Public Services Desk of the library.

If you are not associated with NMU as a student, faculty, or staff, learn more about the Community Borrower program.

Renewing Olson Library Material

Books, government documents, and media can be renewed indefinitely unless the item is on hold or recalled. Equipment, bikes, lockers and reserve items cannot be renewed.

To renew an NMU item, login to your account in the library catalog. You may click “Select All” or click the appropriate checkboxes. Select "Request Renewal."

Renewing MelCat Material

MeLCat loans for most materials are for 21 days. If no local holds are placed on the material, you may renew for an additional 21 days. Books may be renewed within one week (7 days) of their due date. The loan period for audio-visual material is 7 days (which is not renewable). To check on the due date or renew items received through MelCat, login to MyMel by entering your name and barcode number from the back of your Wildcat Express Card. Once logged in, click the "items currently checked out" link. You will see the due date for each item currently checked out. To renew an item, click the checkbox next to the appropriate item and click the "Renew Selected" button. Make note of the new due date. Click the "Logout" button when finished.

Renewing Interlibrary Loan Material

The loan period for interlibrary loan materials varies and is set by the lending libraries. To request an extension of the loan period online, login to the Interlibrary Loan system. Select the "View/Renew Checked Out Items" button, click on the "View/Edit" button for the item you would like to renew, then click the Request Renewal button. The Interlibrary Loan staff will notify you if the lending library will allow an extension. Additionally, renewal requests may be made in person at the circulation desk, by telephone (906-227-2260), or by e-mail to libill@nmu.edu.

The date you are charged is known as the billing date. There is a grace period before all charges become non-refundable. If the item is returned within the grace period, the replacement cost will be refunded and late fees will be assessed; however, the processing fee will not be refunded.

If the item is returned after the replacement cost refund deadline, the item is considered a gift to the library. You may request a letter acknowledging your gift at the time you return the item. Fines and processing fees are non-refundable.

If you wish to appeal charges, you must do so by submitting a Billing and Fine Appeal form within 15 days of the billing date. You will receive a response within 2 weeks.

The Lydia M. Olson Library reserves the right to suspend a patron’s borrowing privileges. Registration, diplomas, and transcripts will be held until all materials are returned and/or all fines are paid.
