Support for Scholarship

Research literature

Olson Library maintains a collection of over 445,000 books, 27,000 e-books, 26,000 electronic journals, and 85 databases for locating scholarly literature.
  • OneSearchcontains articles available from the library, plus library catalog holdings as well.  Think of it as your one stop for searching.
  • Library Catalog – for locating books, documents, and other materials in Olson Library.
  • MeLCat – Catalog of over 250 Michigan libraries. Can directly request books and other materials (not journals or journal articles) be sent to Olson Library.
  • Interlibrary Loan – Getting materials not available at Olson Library.
  • Circulation - Information on renewing library materials and circulation loan periods.
  • University Archives - Primary source material on local and regional history; see collection holdings and finding aids.

Research Assistance

  • Library liaisons – For help in locating research literature by discipline.
  • Library reference staff – For help with general reference questions.
  • University Archivist – For assistance with questions about the Archives or in identifying and accessing collections of primary sources available at NMU, the region, and nationally.

  • Endnote – Program allowing researchers to collect citations, take notes, sort their notes, and format their bibliographies and in-text citations.
  • SPSS – Statistical software package.
  • Adobe Professional - Program for creating pdf documents.
  • Microsoft Expression Web - Program for creating Web pages.
  • Other available software (restrictions apply)

Support for Instruction

Online Courses or Technology Enhanced Courses

  • CTL (Center for Teaching and Learning) - Supports the University’s online course management system (EduCat) and assists faculty with the creation of online courses. The unit also supports incorporating technology into classroom-based courses.
    • EduCat – EduCat can be used to create entire on-line courses, or to simply publish materials that supplement existing courses.
      • Requesting a EduCat course – Done through MyWeb, faculty services. Sign-in and there is an icon to request a course.
      • EduCat Help – guidelines and tips for using EduCat.
    • Software for graphics editing, interactive multimedia, video and audio editing, screen recording, web page editing, and more. Hardware includes webcams, printers, scanners, graphics tablets, and pc microphones.
  • Course Technology Alliance – Consists of several LIS departments and others in the Learning Resources Division that provide faculty with support to allow them to develop technology-rich, hybrid and online courses.  

Classroom Equipment

  • Instructional Design and Technology - provides a variety of equipment for the classroom, including portable equipment carts, mp3 recorder, camcorders, audio cassette recorders, slide projectors, document cameras, and public address systems.

Library and Archives Support

  • Library Instruction - Librarians at Olson Library will offer a tailored instruction session either online, or during your regularly scheduled class time in the classroom or at the library.
  • ELIS - Embedded Library Instruction Services - ELIS is the next step in state-of-the-art, personal pro-active library services to NMU students. It reaches beyond having a LIS faculty member as "guest speaker"--it is an entire package of resources which are added to the online component of your courses.
  • E-reserves – Assigned readings and reference materials are accessible to students 24x7. The library will digitize material not available electronically and manages all copyright issues.
  • Library Distance Education Services - Learn what library services are available to your students who are at a distance.
  • Purchase Request Forms - Recommend resources to purchase for the library collection.
  • Copyright Guidance - Resources for compliance with U.S. copyright laws.
  • Archive Workshops – The Archivist provides workshops for students on critical thinking skills in the analysis of primary sources and a basic introduction to archival research.

Support for the Laptop

Any question or problem relating to computer hardware, software, or the campus network is handled by the Help Desk. Some of the areas or issues for which the Help Desk can provide support include:

  • Access problems and password resets for MyNMU, MyUser, MyWeb, Instruct server, faculty.nmu.edu, and email.

Computer Repair

  • Warranty service for Lenovo and Apple laptops and desktops
  • Repair other machine and printers (NMU or personal equipment) for time and materials.
